During my visit to Bahiravokanda Vihara Buddha statue in Kandy, I encountered a very interesting dog. Like in evening we typically go to the balcony or terrace of our house to gaze outside, this dog had an uncanny knack of doing the same. The Buddha statue is located up on a hill and gives a commanding view of Kandy city. At the base of the statue there is a passage whose wall has nicely designed gaps in between. In the evening the dog places itself in one of the gaps and watches around. The evening watcher is so graceful and I found he is very popular with tourist as well for this act. One local person told me, he is the most photographed after the Buddha statue and the panorama around. I replied back, “After all, he is Buddha’s evening watcher”.
